Consultancy

When should you choose a financial data consultant?

You choose a financial data consultant when you need someone who understands how accounting systems, payroll software or ERP environments work - and who translates that into actionable analyses, dashboards or models. Not someone who merely masters a tool, but someone who knows what the numbers actually mean.

This differs from our broader dashboard or analytics services. There, we take on the full journey: from strategy and data warehouse to adoption. With consultancy, we add targeted financial data expertise to your team or project.

  • For finance teams that want control over data from multiple sources but lack the translation skills.
  • For organisations that want to build dashboards based on their accounting, payroll data or ERP.
  • For projects that need someone who knows financial structures: charts of accounts, cost centres, consolidation, intercompany.

Three ways to engage our financial data consultants

The form depends on your question, urgency and internal capacity. We keep engagements practical and transparent.

One-off advice or analysis

A financial analysis, feasibility check, review of existing reports or help defining KPIs and metrics. Available from a single day.

Recurring support

Periodic sparring on financial reporting, new source connections, data quality or dashboard development. Via a punch card or fixed arrangement.

Project-based engagement

For larger projects: setting up a financial data model, building a suite of dashboards, or combining multiple sources into a reliable complete picture.

Consultancy remains focused: we add financial data expertise where it's needed. When a full data platform or BI programme is required, our broader services connect seamlessly.

Expertise

Financial sources and systems we work with daily

Our consultants know the structures, quirks and limitations of common financial systems. That means we don't start from scratch: we know what a general ledger looks like in Exact, how payroll data comes out of Nmbrs or Loket, and how tax data relates to the bookkeeping.

We combine that source knowledge with experience building dashboards, analyses, data models and predictions. Whether it's a single management dashboard or a complete financial data platform.

From practice

Why financial data expertise makes the difference

Anyone can learn to build a dashboard. But knowing what the numbers mean - why a cost price calculation doesn't add up, how intercompany bookings affect consolidation, or why payroll data doesn't reconcile with the financial administration - that requires domain knowledge.

Our consultants combine that financial knowledge with technical skills. They speak the language of controllers, accountants and finance managers, and know how to reliably extract, model and present data from the sources.

Approach

Our approach to financial data consultancy

We always start with the question behind the question: what do you need to know, which decisions do you want to improve, and which sources are available? From there, we choose the shortest path to usable results.

For short questions, we deliver analysis or advice directly. For larger projects, we work iteratively: first a working foundation, then expansion based on what proves valuable in practice.

Independent of software vendors

We advise based on your financial question and data sources, not vendor interests. Whether you work with Power BI, Tableau or another platform.

1.

Understand the financial question and context

We determine which insights you need, which decisions should improve, and who will use the analyses.

2.

Inventory and connect sources

We map which systems are relevant, what the data looks like, and what the quality and availability is.

3.

Analyse, model and visualise

We build what's needed: a dashboard, analysis, prediction model or data model that aligns with your financial structure.

4.

Deliver and hand over

We ensure the result is usable for your team, document choices and advise on maintenance and further development.

Partner

CFO and controller expertise when financial context is crucial

Financial data analysis sometimes requires more than technical knowledge alone. Definitions need to be commercially sound, KPIs must align with budgets and forecasts, and reports must be usable in management meetings.

When that financial or control expertise is needed, we can collaborate with BPO - De Administratie. Datalab handles the data, analyses and dashboards; BPO assists as part-time CFO/controller with KPI choices, interpretation, budget monitoring and the management rhythm around the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about a financial data consultant

Practical answers for organisations seeking expertise in working with financial data.

What's the difference from a BI consultant?

A BI consultant focuses primarily on the dashboard platform: Power BI, Tableau or another tool. A financial data consultant additionally understands the sources, structures and substance of financial data. We know how a chart of accounts works, what salary components mean and how tax data relates to the bookkeeping. Do you have a specifically tool-related question? See our Power BI consultant or Tableau consultant.

Which systems can you connect?

We work daily with Exact Online, Exact Globe, AFAS, Twinfield, Multivers, Yuki, Nmbrs, Loket, Nextens, FiscaalGemak and various e-commerce and ERP systems. Where standard connectors are unavailable, we assess whether an API, export or custom connector is the best route. See also our source pages for Exact Online, AFAS and Nmbrs.

Can you also deploy prediction models or AI on financial data?

Yes. Think of cash flow forecasts, margin predictions, anomaly detection or churn analysis based on financial patterns. We then combine financial domain knowledge with our experience in Analytics & AI. The foundation must be sound: reliable data, clear definitions and a good data model.

What does a financial data consultant cost?

That depends on the engagement form. We can start small - for example with a one-off analysis or a short advisory project - and expand from there. Datalab typically works with a clear, fixed monthly fee so costs remain predictable. Schedule a call to determine the right form.

Do you only work with Power BI?

No. We're independent and work with Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny and other platforms. The choice depends on your situation, existing tooling and users. See also our consultants for Power BI, Tableau and R Shiny.

Do you also offer complete solutions for specific sectors?

Yes. Besides consultancy, we offer complete solutions such as Accountancy Studio, Retail Studio, Datalab Society Studio, Datalab Studio and solutions for finance teams. This allows us to connect financial data expertise with a broader data foundation, management information and adoption in your organisation.

When is a broader service more logical than consultancy?

If the question isn't just about financial analyses but also about a data warehouse, data strategy, data quality or organisation-wide adoption, our services Dashboards & BI, Data warehouse setup or Data strategy & advisory are often a better starting point.
